The family and friends of the Rev. Dr. Thomas Dix Bowers (VTS '56) have established the Thomas Dix Bowers Preaching Fellowship Fund at Virginia Theological Seminary in celebration of his eightieth birthday, and in recognition of the impact his inspirational preaching of the Gospel and the love of Jesus Christ has had on the lives of many over fifty years of devoted ministry to the Church.

Dr. Bowers received his Master in Divinity from Virginia Seminary in 1956 and went on to serve with distinction at St. James' Church, Accomac, Virginia; St. George's Church, Pungoteague, Virginia; St Alban's Church, Washington, DC; St. Patrick's Church, Washington, DC; St. Luke's Church, Atlanta, Georgia; St. Bartholomew's Church, New York City; and after retirement as interim rector at St. John's Church, Lafayette Square, Washington, DC.; and St. David's Church, Austin, Texas.

"The memorable preaching of Tom Bowers contains his brilliant gifts for story telling, biblical interpretation, stand up comic, tender passion, and theological relevance all wrapped in to each of his riveting sermons," said a colleague and friend, the Rev. Dr. Daniel P. Matthews, rector emeritus at Trinity Wall Street. "Having followed him as rector of St. Luke's Atlanta, I can attest to the lasting affect his powerful words have had in changing the lives of those who hear him."

"His sermons can rend even the stoniest hearts and bring tears to every dry eye," said a long time friend, George McGonigle, P.E., D.D. of Austin Texas. "Tom's preaching is a call to arms. May he continue to comfort the troubled and trouble the comfortable."

The Thomas Dix Bowers Preaching Fellowship Fund will be used to bring noted preachers of the Church to Virginia Seminary to lift up and honor the art and ministry of preaching at the Seminary and throughout the Church. The Bowers Preaching Fellow will be a visiting fellow in preaching who will preach and teach at the Seminary while in residence and contribute to the life of the community.

"The proclamation of the Word is at the heart of Christian worship," said the Very Rev. Ian Markham, dean and president of Virginia Seminary. "We celebrate the ministry of the Rev. Dr. Thomas Dix Bowers, by celebrating the gift of preaching here in the VTS community. This is a delightful way to help shape the up and coming preachers of the next generation."

Guidelines related to applications for the position, and the responsibilities and term of residency of a Bowers Preaching Fellow will be established at the direction of the dean and president of Virginia Theological Seminary.
