The Virginia Theological Seminary has long demonstrated its calling to convene and to host groups who work on behalf of the Anglican Communion.  It is a tradition of hospitality that the Center for Anglican Communion Studies will embody and practice in its ministry and mission.

The Lambeth Conference of 1988 charged the Inter-Anglican Theological and Doctrinal Commission with the task of considering “in some depth the meaning and nature of communion.”  In 1997, on the eve of the Lambeth Conference of 1998, this Commission produced THE VIRGINIA REPORT for the Anglican Consultative Council.  In the Report’s preface, The Most Rev. Robert Eames, Archbishop of Armagh, acknowledged “with sincere gratitude the generosity and support given to the Commission by the Right Reverend Peter Lee, Bishop of Virginia, the Diocese of Virginia and the staff of the Virginia Theological Seminary.  Their practical assistance and encouragement made the production of this Report possible.”  The Virginia Seminary tradition of serving, hosting and leading in the Anglican Communion will continue to be at the heart of the Center’s life, on campus and elsewhere.

When asked, the Center for Anglican Communion Studies will facilitate conferences, consultations and workshop that serve the development of the ministry and mission of the Communion.  From time to time the Center will initiate gatherings for the sake of the Communion and for the cause of the Gospel.
