Foundry United Methodist Church is a vibrant, reconciling congregation of 1,400 members in the heart of Washington, DC. Foundry seeks a Youth Minister who initiates and oversees quality Christian education and Christian formation programs for youth (grades 6th – 12th) attending Foundry United Methodist Church. Working with lay leadership, volunteers and adult leaders, he or she develops and implements programs that are theological challenging and relevant to the real life questions teenagers often ask.
This staff member works with youth, parents and other laity to shape new and innovative ministry programs that support faith development, service, connections, celebrations and sharing. In particular, this person builds on Foundry’s commitment to not only teach youth, but to learn from them and their experiences.
The Youth Minister position is part-time and is supervised by and accountable to the Minister to Children and Families.
Equipping Youth Leadership
- Leads classes in selecting a team of Youth Deacons, leaders who are named by their peers and trained to serve as leaders
- Recruits, trains, and equips Adult Leaders for both Junior and Senior High
- Works closely with the Adult Leaders and Youth Deacons to coordinate the content and leadership of Sunday morning sessions
Other Responsibilities with Youth
- Coordinates and oversees the confirmation program. Responsibilities include recruiting confirmands, recruiting and training mentors, planning regular sessions and special events, and coordinating the confirmation service on the Day of Pentecost.
- Youth Minister works to promote youth engagement in mission throughout the year and, especially, supports the annual Appalachia Service Project Team.
- Engages the youth in worship in meaningful ways, including worship leadership, and gives special attention to the planning and execution of Youth Sunday
- Connectivity between Staff and Congregation
- Coordinates the youth program with the larger mission and ministry of the church
- Communicates upcoming events and concerns with youth, parents, adult leaders and staff via email, mail, phone, individual conversation and Focus
- Communicates the priorities and activities of the youth work area to the larger congregation
- Maintains finances, including week-to-week maintenance of budgeted accounts and periodic fundraising
- Ensures compliance with the Child Protection Policy through maintaining paperwork, checking references, and annual trainings
