The Seminary has four on-campus residence halls for student housing. The residence hall rooms are designed to accommodate only one person, and therefore cannot support a student coming to seminary with other family members. The residence halls also do not accommodate pets and are smoke-free throughout.
Each residence hall room is furnished with a twin regular or twin long bed, a large dresser, one book case, and a desk and chair. Every residence hall room has its own private bathroom, with either a tub/shower combination or a shower stall only. All rooms are both hard-wired for direct access to the Internet and receive a high-speed wireless Internet signal. Each residence hall has a common lounge with a television with cable service, a kitchen, and a laundry room. The common rooms are wonderful gathering places for residents to relax and enjoy one another’s company. All on-campus residents are required to subscribe to the full meal plan with 7 days a week service. Residence hall kitchens may be used on an occasional basis for preparing a snack or heating up a frozen meal.
On-campus students rapidly develop friendships and begin to make trips into nearby Washington to take advantage of its many cultural resources. Some of these trips are to local churches to experience the varying forms of worship conducted in the churches of other traditions. Countless restaurants, theaters, movies, and stores are found in the metropolitan area. The type and degree of camaraderie developed each year depends on the students. Single students may elect to live on- or off-campus during their entire stay at the Seminary.
Guidelines for On-Campus Housing Assignments
Every spring, the Seminary begins the process of selection and assignment of residence hall rooms for the next academic year. The Seminary reserves a number of rooms for residence staff and for prospective new students. Current students wishing to return to the residence halls must complete an On-Campus Housing Request Survey online through myVTS by April 15. Returning students are assigned rooms based upon their stated preferences with priority given to students with a documented health or disability condition that necessitates a specific type of housing, followed by rising seniors and then by rising middlers. If the number of returning students requesting rooms exceeds the number of rooms available for returning students, some will be placed on a waiting list until the entering student housing selection and assignment process is completed.
New students will be accommodated in on-campus housing on a first-come, first-served basis as determined by the date on which their registration and degree fee deposit was received. New students must complete an On-Campus Housing Request Form and submit it to the Director of Housing by June 1. New students who are accepted and pay their deposits after all residence hall rooms are filled will need to find housing off-campus. The Seminary is not responsible for locating alternate housing for such students, but will assist, when possible, with renting an apartment in one of the local apartment complexes with which we have a relationship. The Seminary is not responsible for supplementing costs incurred if a person chooses to live alone off-campus. Normally, students who maintain a local residence within reasonable commuting distance (a 30-mile radius of the Seminary) will not be eligible to live in the residence halls unless space is clearly available.
