Today we welcome to campus the North American Committee of St. George’s College in Jerusalem. This Committee has been important in the support of the College and all its work, especially through educational opportunities that focus on Christian faith and scripture in the context of the Holy Land. Much of the education is a kind of pilgrimage, and this can’t but be done apart from an understanding of the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim communities who are today joined and separated by geography, history, politics, practice, and faith.

This year, as in most years, VTS students participated in a three-week course in our January term. Others have taken courses at other times during the year. In supporting such study, the North American Committee has for the last several years supported the College in the awarding of a St. George’s College Prize for study at St. George’s College to one graduating senior from VTS and one from each of the other Episcopal seminaries.

Relationships between St. George’s and VTS are many. To name just three, the Rt. Rev. Allen L. Bartlett, Jr. (M.Div. 1958; D.Min., 1980; D.D., 1985) will complete 10 years as the President of the North American Committee of St. George’s College. The Rev. Dr. Graham Smith (D.Min. 1997) is the present Dean of the College. And our own Rev. Dr. Barney Hawkins has served as Treasurer to the North American Committee and as advocate for the College. We are thankful for the many relationships that connect us as the Body of Christ.
