Normally, I don't do this. It isn't my practice to look ahead to Sunday night while it is currently Wednesday. But today, I want us to clear our calendars and try to get to this special service. It will be held in our Interim Chapel at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 15, 2013. It is a Jazz Mass of Rememberance and Renewal. And its purpose is to remember tragedy and renew our commitment to create a world that is different.
On September 15, 1963, four young girls - Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson and Cynthia Wesley were killed in the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Al. On the anniversary of this tragedy, we will gather and remember this moment. We will do so because we must never forget.
Please do come; please invite your friends; please let your field education sites know. Let us really use this as an opportunity to remember how racism cost many lives. Let us renew our commitment to serve and live the Gospel in this broken world.
The Very Rev Ian Markham
