The Very Rev. Peter Wall

11/14/2013
This contribution to the Commentary was submitted by The Very Rev. Peter Wall: Rector of Christ's Church Cathedral, Hamilton, Ontario; Dean of Niagara; and Anglican Co-Chair of the Joint Anglican Lutheran Commission of Canada. We were privileged to have Dean Wall spend a week on campus recently as a fellow of the Center for Anglican Communion Studies.

Dean Wall writes:

It was a great gift for me to be able to spend time at VTS and a great honour to be welcomed as a Visiting Scholar of the Center for Anglican Communion Studies. My time at Virginia was part of my sabbatical leave, in which I was doing some research and writing on Cathedral worship, with a goal of creating a Customary for my own Cathedral in Hamilton, ON. As I think happen often on study leaves, what one thought one might produce differs from what actually gets written! Through my earlier study time at the Cathedral in Boston, and in spending very good time in the wonderful library at VTS, I was able to complete a first draft of some reflections on Cathedrals in general and on Cathedral worship in particular. I also got some very important work done on a document which at the moment, is simply entitled: ‘Best Practices’; less a prescription dealing with all the minutiae of Cathedral worship and more a recognition of the richness of our liturgies and the richness of our people. I could not have done any of that without the splendid and highly valued solitude and support which I was able to enjoy at VTS.

Certainly one of the highlights was to be able to present a forum with Dr. Mitzi Budde on Episcopal-Lutheran relations on both sides of the border. My work in Canada involves me deeply in Anglican-Lutheran work, and I so appreciate the work that Mitzi does in the US as Lutheran Co-Chair of the Episcopal Lutheran Coordinating Committee. We have had bilateral meetings over the last couple of years, so it was a particular blessing to be able to visit her and to work with her during my visit. VTS is indeed fortunate to have her on faculty!

Thanks so much to Dr. Robert Heaney and to the Centre for Anglican Communion Studies, to Dr. Mitzi Budde and the Bishop Payne Library, and to all at VTS. I’ll be back!
