Alexandria, Va. - Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS) has opened registration for one of the most highly anticipated "Fridays at the Seminary" events of the year when Dr. Martin Marty shares his insights into the changing face of Christian journalism in the program "Covering Religion and Uncovering Religion in Media Today." The event will take place on the VTS campus on Friday, April 25 from 9:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
A historian of modern Christianity, Martin Marty taught in the University of Chicago Divinity School, the Department of History, and the Committee on the History of Culture from 1963-1998. An ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Dr. Marty put considerable effort into the Master of Divinity Program at the Divinity School. His six-year "Fundamentalism Project" for the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1988-1994) led him to enlarge his focus to global inter-religious concerns.
Since 1998 the Martin Marty Center for the Advanced Study of Religion at the University of Chicago Divinity School has brought scholarly perspectives to bear on religious questions facing the wider public. This includes "Sightings," an electronic editorial published by the center.
After the presentation, the Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D., dean and president of VTS, will moderate a question and answer period, followed by Eucharist and lunch. The event is coordinated by the seminary’s Office of Lifetime Theological Education (LTE).
