The opportunity to go overseas and learn about another culture is an extraordinary gift. Students are preparing for their trip to Israel (they fly out Sunday night); others are getting ready to learn Spanish and serve in the Dominican Republic. This is good and important.
However, today, I wish to recognize the disappointment of those planning to go to South Sudan. Just before Christmas, the decision had to be made about whether it was appropriate to proceed with this trip. Sadly, as the South Sudan steadily descends into violence, we felt that that the trip was unwise. Even more sad, those students in Renk in the Sudan who were looking forward to guest professors teaching Greek and Hebrew are instead worried about the state of their country.
Let us remember in our prayers all those who are traveling on cross-cultural immersions. Let us remember the church in the South Sudan. Travel carefully; may God send Angels to watch over you.
