Today I head to Pittsburgh with my colleagues, Dean Ian Markham and Vice President Melody Knowles, to attend the biennial meeting of the Association of Theological Schools (ATS). As I registered for the meeting in the early spring I was reminded that two years ago we were in the home stretch of preparing for our accreditation visit and the biennial offered us an opportunity to connect with ATS staff and other seminary colleagues who answered questions and offered helpful advice as we entered the home stretch.
This year we are on the other side of the process, having received final approval in September 2013 of our reaccreditation through spring 2023. The accreditation process affirmed that VTS is strong in many areas: our mission is understood and embraced by students, staff, faculty and trustees; our strategic plan reflects our mission and is monitored and reviewed on a regular basis; and we embrace a culture of assessment and evaluation.
I am looking forward to reconnecting with ATS staff and colleagues from other ATS accredited schools and having the opportunity to share with them some of our best practices in the area of institutional evaluation and educational assessment.
