Spark is a Sunday school faith formation program designed for children age 2 through grade 6. The curriculum features three tracks with resources for thematic, lectionary and rotation models.
• Spark Bibles
• Classroom materials
• Rotation materials
• Enrichment CD
Recognizing the differences in the way children learn, Spark offers hands-on crafts, writing and reading activities, interactive games, and music. Teachers can select activities to fit the needs of their students. Activities are age appropriate and developmentally sound.
The thematic (or classroom) model highlights key Old Testament and New Testament Bible stories in a two-year cycle. Old Testament stories are studied in the fall; New Testament in the winter and spring. Seasonal stories for Christmas, Easter and Pentecost are included in the sequence.
The lectionary model follows stories in the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL). In the three-year cycle children will study Bible stories from the Old Testament, the gospels, or the Book of Acts, coinciding with the readings used in worship. Similar to other lectionary models, Spark tends to emphasize readings from the gospels; in Fall 2009 nine of the eleven sessions came from the gospels.
The rotation model provides eight workshop options allowing the children to spend more than one week on each Bible story. Rotations include: art, Bible skills and games, computer lab, cooking, creative drama, music, science and video. An in-room model with fewer options is available for preschoolers. The rotation model has 48 story options from both the Old and New Testaments.
