The Rev. Frank Wade

In the summer of 2016, the Rev. Frank Wade, Ph.D. (’66, ’81, ’13), the former interim dean of the Washington National Cathedral and former rector of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, joined the affiliated faculty of Virginia Theological Seminary.

“I look forward to sharing the journey and its discoveries with you,“ Professor Wade said, introducing himself to the VTS community through the daily Dean’s Commentary. “Change, newness and adjustment are basic life-giving and life-disrupting realities. As I step in as Interim Associate Dean of Students, the VTS community finds a different, if not entirely new, face in a key position.”

Wade is a graduate of The Citadel and the Virginia Theological Seminary and has served as an Episcopal priest since 1966. After serving congregations in his native West Virginia for 17 years, he was called as Rector of St. Alban’s congregation in 1983. Wade continued: “The good fruit I have seen has a spiritual depth and health nurtured in knowledge and experience that makes all else possible. Developing the eyes to see and the ears to hear which Jesus said were essential to the Kingdom are an essential part of priestly formation. Graduates are traditionally edgy about the lack of specifics a trade school approach would have provided. Those things can be learned in the (usually bumpy) beginnings of ministry while spiritual depth and theological categories of understanding cannot. I hope to see and even play a part in that development.”

His sermons have been published in a variety of anthologies. His meditations as Chaplain to the House of Deputies at the 2000 General Convention of the Episcopal Church were published by Forward Movement Press and recorded by the Episcopal Media Center under the title Jubilee People, Jubilee Lives. He is also the author of Rites of Our Passage, a collection of sermons. A book on tape and CD by Dr. Wade titled The Art of Being Together: Common Sense About Life Long Relationships was produced by the Episcopal Media Center. He is active on a variety of community and church boards.
