The Rev. Joseph D. Thompson, Jr., Ph.D., currently serves as assistant professor of Race and Ethnicity Studies and director of Multicultural Ministries. His work ensures seminarians engage with issues of race and ethnicity, justice, and intercultural awareness as part of their theological education. He was formerly archivist for the African American Episcopal Historical Collection, also at VTS. Before joining the VTS community, Dr. Thompson taught for ten years at Washington University in St. Louis. He holds an H.B.A. from the University of Delaware, an M.A. from Virginia Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D., an M. Phil., and an M.A. from Yale University.
In addition, he has served at higher education institutions in various roles throughout the past 15 years, including Senior Lecturer and Educational Archivist, Academic Coordinator of African and African-American Studies, Faculty Fellow, and Assistant Professor.
