The Rev. Shawn Strout, Ph.D. is Associate for Academic Programming and Assessment and Visiting Professor of Worship. He first taught at VTS as an adjunct faculty member in 2018. He joined the faculty as Visiting Professor of Worship in 2020. He completed his Ph.D. in liturgical studies/sacramental theology at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. His dissertation was entitled, “Of Thine Own Have We Given Thee:” A Liturgical Theology of the Offertory as Practiced by the Churches of the Anglican Communion. His dissertation supervisor was the Rev. Dominic Serra, S.L.D., and his readers were the Very Rev. Mark Morozowich, S.E.O.D. and the Rev. Bryan Spinks, D.D.
In addition, Dr. Strout also serves as an adjunct faculty member for the Anglican Studies certificate jointly administered by Lancaster Theological Seminary and the Stevenson School for Ministry in central Pennsylvania.
Before joining the faculty at VTS, Dr. Strout served in parish ministry for over seven years at St. Paul’s K Street and the Church of the Ascension and St. Agnes, both in Washington, D.C., as well as Christ Church in Kensington, MD.
Dr. Strout’s publications include a chapter entitled “The Word of the Lord: An Examination of the Use of Lectionaries in the Episcopal Church” in Issues in Prayer Book Revision, Volume 1 as well as several articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is currently preparing his dissertation for publication.
Dr. Strout is a member of the North American Academy of Liturgy, Societas Liturgica, and the past chair of the Society of Scholar Priests. He currently serves on the editorial board for Studia Liturgica.
