Our History

Established at Virginia Theological Seminary in 1986, The Butterfly House Preschool (TBH) is as a licensed child care facility in the Commonwealth of Virginia, serving the children of VTS faculty, staff, seminarians, and the community for over 30 years.

Our Philosophy

We integrate emergent, child-centered, and play-based curricula, the theories of Loris Malaguzzi, Erik Erikson, Jean Piaget, Lev Lygotsky, Howard Gardner, and Arnold Gesell into a holistic approach to early childhood education. Based on these principles, we offer children a path to self-expression, communication, logical thinking, and problem-solving.

Mission

The Butterfly House and Caterpillar Club provide a healthy, safe, positive, and nurturing environment for all children. We optimize opportunities for each individual child’s growth in these developmental areas:

  • Social-Emotional
  • Cognitive
  • Linguistic
  • Physical
  • Creative
We encourage diversity in all aspects of our program, invite family participation, and foster positive community relationships.
