Hybrid Faith Formation Cohort (Fall 2019)
    September 17 to November 5
    $150; Register Here

Wrestling with what it means to share and offer Christian formation in person as well as digitally? Sarah Stonesifer and Stacy Williams-Duncan will be leading a Hybrid Faith Formation cohort in Fall 2019. This cohort will be a guided colleague group, working online and gathering via Zoom to build community, ask questions, and participate in discussions.

We know that all of our own personal and professional lives are equally busy and full. We want to make sure that this time is made available for you to truly learn and apply what we are talking about.
Our end goal for the cohort members is that they have a plan and resources to implement a hybrid faith formation opportunity for their own community.

Some have asked about a time commitment. We’ll be doing every-other-week check-ins via Zoom during the workday at the same time and day each week. A topic will be explored each week during the cohort, and between the reading and Zoom call, it will be about 75-90 minutes of work per week. But, if you want to go "down the rabbit hole" on any topic, we’ll provide more expansive sources for you to dive into. Our Zoom calls together will be time to discuss and share ideas. We’ll also do some digital ministry experiments together so that we can get a feel for some different platforms and formats.

Gatherings on Zoom will take place on Tuesdays at 2 pm Eastern. Some are content/presentation focused, while others open office hours and student-driven:
    • September 17th: Content

$100 for all four classes; Register here

The Stations of the Cross offer a pastoral and spiritual resource that can sustain us across all seasons. Drawing on material from a new book, Praying the Stations of the Cross by Kate Sonderegger and Peggy Parker, the class will explore the Stations of the Cross in depth. Parker will discuss the pastoral, theological, and biblical foundations of the Stations, review their history, and offer suggestions for introducing, or renewing, the practice in our parishes. Sonderegger will lecture on the Stations in preaching, prayer, and theology. Designed with parish staff and clergy in mind, the course is also open to interested lay people and seminary students.

    About the book and authors:
Praying the Stations of the Cross – Finding Hope in a Weary Land
By Margaret Adams Parker, Adjunct Instructor in Religion and Culture at VTS, and Katherine Sonderegger, Meade Professor of Systematic Theology at VTS.

Artist Margaret Adams Parker and theologian Katherine Sonderegger make the Stations of the Cross accessible for those new to the practice and offer compelling insight to those with long familiarity. Equally useful for individuals, groups, and congregations, Praying the Stations of the Cross can be used as an ongoing spiritual practice, a service offered in times of sorrow, struggle, or conflict, or a Lenten devotion.

How do we discern when and how God is calling a faith community to something new or to establish a new faith community? What are steps in the discernment process? What happens if our proposed plan differs from God’s plan – how do we adapt? Join church planters The Rev. Emily Scott (Lutheran pastoral leader of Dreams and Visions, a project of the ELCA) and The Rev. Daniel Vélez-Rivera (Vicar of St Gabriel’s Episcopal Church, a uniquely bilingual congregation), in dialogue with The Rev. Dr. Altagracia Pérez-Bullard (VTS Associate Professor of Practical Theology), on the topic of imagining, building, and tending new faith communities. Hear about various church planting experiences and lessons learned.
    About our Panelists:
A graduate of Yale Divinity School, Rev. Emily Scott received the Alumni Award for Distinction in Congregational Ministry in 2016. She was the Director of Worship at The Riverside Church from 2007-2009, and a co-founder of Music That Makes Community. Her work at St. Lydia's has been covered by The Atlantic and the Wall Street Journal. Her book, For All Who Hunger: Searching for Communion in a Shattered World, will be released in Spring, 2020 from Convergent, an imprint of Penguin Random House.
The Rev. Daniel Vélez-Rivera is passionate about establishing loving Christian communities with and for all people. His congregational ministry focus is planting new Latino ministries in existing Episcopal churches and creating sustainable dual-language congregations (English and Spanish). Daniel is vicar of Saint Gabriel’s Episcopal Church~Iglesia San Gabriel in Leesburg, Virginia where he is committed to nourishing and strengthening the community’s call to serve others as Christ’s ambassadors. When St. Gabriel’s launched its Hispanic Ministry in 2014, it became the first bilingual, multicultural Episcopal congregation in Loudoun County, Diocese of Virginia. Daniel is married to Parker Gallagher, his partner of twenty-four years.
The Rev. Altagracia Pérez-Bullard, Ph.D. is assistant professor of Practical Theology at Virginia Theological Seminary, having previously served as the Canon for Congregational Vitality in the Episcopal Diocese of New York. Dr. Pérez-Bullard has served the Church for 30 years as a community leader, youth minister, and priest in multicultural and bilingual congregations in the Dioceses of New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. She worked with Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice (CLUE), Jubilee Consortium, Coalition L.A., UNITE-HERE, Housing Authority for the City of Los Angeles, and President Clinton’s Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS.

"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age." (Mt 28:19-20)

Are you wrestling with how to offer effective Christian formation for adults in your faith community? What does the Great Commission mean in 2019?The VTS Christian Formation faculty (including Dr. Lisa Kimball, Dr. Elizabeth DeGaynor and the Rev. Dr. Altagracia Perez-Bullard) invite you to join the first online Adult Formation cohort gathering weekly via Zoom to build community, ask questions, and participate in discussions on effective Adult Formation.
In each session, the cohort will:
    • Learn the theology and pedagogy that forms the basis of effective formation.
    • Engage as a community of learners in active dialogue as to best methods for putting into practice the theory.
    • Apply learnings to real situations in individual contexts.
Our end goal is for cohort members to own a plan and resources to implement a contextually-responsive adult formation opportunity in their own communities.
The expected time commitment, between the reading and Zoom call, will be about 3 hours per week. But, we’ll provide expansive sources for anyone who desires a deeper dive into a certain topic.
