Last night I was in a hotel just one and half miles away from the shooting in the Oregon district in Dayton Ohio. Yesterday I had participated in the Hooding Ceremony for the Rev. Xavier L. Johnson, DMin at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Today I am preaching at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.
This shooting, along with the mass shooting in El Paso Texas, reminds us afresh of the tragedy of gun violence. Human lives are slaughtered; families are devastated; for many, things are never the same.
The Seminary supports the witness of the Episcopal Church. Gun rights must coexist with the right of families to shop safely in Walmart and visit a bar on East 5th Street. We plead for our elected representatives to be imaginative and constructive as we search for a way forward.
We pray for those who have died and for those who mourn.
