Supporting Faithful Leaders

Our doctoral programs begin with the question, “What vision does God give us for transforming lives, communities, and cultures?” Because every baptized Christian carries out a distinct expression of that vision, we offer varying program tracks oriented to varying ministries. Each track puts theological and biblical resources into conversation with developmental, organizational, and social scientific learning. Our doctoral students focus in their specialized track while also sharing learning across all four tracks.

Our D.Min and D.Ed.Min programs are unparalleled in their integration of
interdisciplinary academic rigor, an unflinching challenge for personal growth,
and demanding expansion of skills and habits for the sake of transformational leadership.

You have valuable experience in ministry. We offer coursework and a leading team of faculty to facilitate new learning. The four doctoral programs at the Virginia Theological Seminary provide unparalleled opportunities to transform ministry and leadership for the mission of God. We integrate your lived experience with rigorous learning to shape leaders who are building the church of the future. Faculty in our interdenominational program are both scholars and practitioners who draw from multiple disciplines to fully integrate learning and practice. We believe that God’s Spirit is ever enlivening the Church, both through careful study of our sacred tradition and through new words spoken by the Spirit in our contemporary contexts. Through fostering wise, skillful, and faithful leaders, we seek to empower the church to hear anew the calling of God’s Spirit.

Education Requirements

Doctor of Educational Ministry Program

The D.Ed.Min. program is for those professionals who are employed in positions of significant service and leadership in religiously affiliated educational settings, who do not possess an M.Div. or equivalent graduate theological degree, but who do possess a Master's degree in a field relevant to the course of study.

Doctor of Ministry Programs

VTS considers applicants holding an M.Div. degree. VTS also considers applicants who have the equivalent of 72 credit hours of graduate-level education that includes core components of an M.Div. degree. This typically means a Master’s degree from an accredited graduate school plus additional work as necessary to account for at least 72 credit hours of graduate-level courses with a suggested distribution in the following areas:
  • Bible – 12 credit hours, with work in both testaments
  • History, Theology, Ethics – 12 credit hours, with work in all areas
  • Field Education – 12 credit hours or equivalent (e.g., 3 years full-time ministry, CPE residency, internship)
  • Other Theological/Interdisciplinary Focal Areas – 18 credit hours (areas related to the arts of ministry and leadership – equivalency from other fields considered)
  • Plus an additional 18 graduate-level credit hours in an applied field.

International Applicants

All non-US citizens who come for study at VTS must apply for and be granted a student visa to allow them to enter the United States.  Please read the information about F-1 Student Visas found in the "International Applicant" section of the VTS website

Applicants who earned their degrees in countries other than in the United States or Canada must also provide third party evaluations that equate their coursework and academic programs to those in the US system.  A list of third party evaluating organizations can be found in the download area on the DMin electronic application webpage. For inquiries about MDiv educational equivalency, please contact the Director of Doctoral Programs.
