VTS was honored to welcome Dr. Christena Cleveland to deliver the Sprigg Lectures last week, as part of Alumni Convocation. Dr. Cleveland is a distinguished social psychologist, public theologian, author and professor. She is Associate Professor of the Practice of Organizational Studies at Duke University’s Divinity School and the author of Disunity in Christ: Uncovering the Hidden Forces that Keep Us Apart. She was named by ChristianityToday as one of 33 millennials leading the next generation of Christian faith.

Dr. Cleveland's lectures addressed fundamental contemporary struggles with the great mystery of human community. Her first presentation asked "Why do people get along? Why do people affirm their self esteem by denigrating a different group? How can images of people affect the behavior of people?" The second day's lecture explored how power dynamics in our society privilege various groups.
