Generative AI can be a valuable tool for ministry, scholarship, and education when used responsibly and prayerfully. At Virginia Theological Seminary and The General Theological Seminary, we affirm that all users remain fully accountable for their words and work, even when AI assistance is involved. Gen AI should enhance—not replace—human reflection, creativity, and theological discernment. Its use requires careful attention to privacy, accuracy, ethical impact, environmental cost, and fairness, especially regarding marginalized voices and sensitive pastoral contexts. In ministry and academic settings, Gen AI may be used for tasks such as drafting, editing, and research with appropriate transparency, while confidential pastoral information must never be entered into public systems. Educational use should preserve intellectual formation and critical thinking, and authors must disclose meaningful AI assistance where required. Above all, responsible use of Gen AI is guided by integrity, discernment, and commitment to the common good.

The Gospel is political. But it is political in a particular way. Jesus announced a reign with no military, maintained unclear borders, called for mercy and compassion as fundamental ways of living, and turned conventional values upside down.
Following the lead of VTS graduate Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde, “Have Mercy” is a resource of essays and discussion questions from VTS and GTS faculty that speak to the signs of the times.
Each essay takes one core Christian belief or practice, rooted in scripture, and explores its significance for this political moment.
Your gift to VTS is a powerful force for good in the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion: forming leaders, strengthening the Church, touching the lives of people in need of God’s love, and providing resources for ministry around the world. VTS relies on gifts of all sizes, and you play a vital role in sustaining our mission and ministry.
For 200 Years, Virginia Theological Seminary has been at the forefront of international Anglican witness and education. The Center for Anglican Communion Studies is an integral part of that witness, making available scholars and scholarship in the service of a reconciling intercultural Anglicanism.
We equip the international community of Anglicans and Episcopalians by hosting conferences, providing consultations, and supporting partnerships and projects with churches and theological institutions.
