Church and Community Engagement

Social Partnerships

I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.    (Matt. 25:35-36)

Our neighborhoods and communities matter

Episcopalians at their baptism renounce the evil powers of the world which corrupt and destroy God's creatures, and promise to seek and serve Christ in all persons, love their neighbors, and strive for justice and peace among all people. This is the life of public faith that seeks to make a difference in the world around us. It starts locally, where we live. How well do we do this, in our communities?

Through Church and Community Engagement, VTS is participating more deeply in its surrounding communities of Alexandria, northern Virginia, and Washington DC. CCE is building and anchoring relationships between VTS and key metropolitan organizations and agencies engaged in community relief, development, advocacy, and action. Through CCE, the Seminary is taking a leadership role in addressing local and regional community issues including a living wage and affordable housing. CCE builds partnerships with and between organizations, and has become a connecting hub for conversation, collaboration, and mutual learning. CCE has developed sturdy volunteer opportunities and placements for VTS students, faculty, staff, families, and potential pre-seminary volunteers; CCE is helping the Seminary lead ecumenical and inter-religious interaction among clergy and congregations in the area, and between clergy and other networks with significant community impact.
CCE has successfully established collaborative relationships and volunteer sites with over 30 agencies across Alexandria, Arlington, Washington DC, and northern VA. All M.Div. students at VTS are required to take a course that places students in these agencies to learn and work.

CCE helps VTS faculty, staff, and students connect and volunteer their efforts in the surrounding communities through an array of partnerships across a spectrum or organizations, addressing core concerns of food, housing, health, incarceration and post-prison reentry, education, and elder care. Our VTS community participation in public life and the concerns of our surrounding neighborhoods and cities brings fresh perspective to everything we do on campus.
