Family Ties: Exploring the Book of Genesis

The Rev. Dr. Peter Antoci
Mondays, February 5 – April 23, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. (no class 2/19 & 4/2)
Addison 111

The Book of Genesis is often read as a story about beginnings, about the origin of the cosmos and all of its creatures. However, the driving theological tension in the story revolves around a tale of tribal origins worked out in familial relations. Like any good tale of family relationships, tension abounds in the unfolding story. Vividly depicting tangled family relationships and abounding in dramatic tensions, Genesis still grips our imaginations today and stimulates searching conversations about how God relates to us in our human complexity.

How Myths Make Meaning: Theological Themes in Star Wars and Harry Potter
The Rev. Dr. Patricia Lyons
Mondays, February 5 – April 23, 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. (no class 2/19 & 4/2)

This course explores theological and spiritual themes through the lens of the Harry Potter and Star War franchises. What do these modern-day mythologies tell us about our own Christian lives and intersections with our world? Why is there continuing interest in the worlds they have created? This fun, exciting course will be of particular interest to students who enjoy, or who want to explore, a non-traditional pedagogical approach to theology and spirituality. And there will be popcorn served for our many movie clips.
