My plan on Friday was to leave the campus at 4:00 p.m. to watch my son, Luke, play soccer. Instead, as the team was gathering at the nearby school, the smoke from the Seminary Chapel was noticed by me and others. Luke and his team also noticed the fire from afar, bowed their heads and prayed for those affected by the fire.
The Alexandria firefighters arrived and made sure that the fire was contained to the Chapel and had not spread to the other buildings. Fortunately, no one was inside the Chapel, nevertheless the sense of loss on the campus is palpable. Facebook abounds with alums changing their profile picture to the “Go ye into all the world” window. We are hurting. This is a time for reflection and a time for honoring the many memories. The Seminary has been here before. It was in 1879 when the last chapel was condemned. For two years the Seminary had to live differently, until a new Chapel was built in 1881. Those who went before us coped; it is now our challenge to do the same.
