Many Seminaries Are Doing Perfectly Well, Thank You

The Very Rev. Ian S. Markham, Ph.D.

A faith that is socially generous, ritually attractive and theologically orthodox is attracting adherents. Our experience isn’t atypical

The negative picture of theological education in “Seminaries Struggle to Maintain Their Roles” (U.S. News, Aug. 11) focuses on institutions in Massachusetts and California, the most secular parts of the country. Virginia Theological Seminary is the strongest seminary in the Episcopal Church. Younger vocations are growing (the median age of our students is 31); the placement rate in parishes is over 95%; and a faith that is socially generous, ritually attractive and theologically orthodox is attracting adherents. Our experience isn’t atypical.
