ALEXANDRIA, VA – Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS) is proud to announce the publication of Lectionary Levity: The Use of Humor in Preaching (Church Publishing, 2017) from Dean Markham, and the Rev. Samantha R.E. Gottlich (’17). With illustrations from Jay Sidebotham, Lectionary Levity spans all 3 years of the lectionary cycle (addressing all 156 Gospel readings), providing a welcome tool for the renewal of preaching from the gospel readings. In a concise, uniform, and simple format, the Markham and Gottlich provide a thematic summary of the gospel, list several possible points for preaching, and offer a humorous story for the week that illumines the deeper meaning of the biblical text.

“Sam Gottlich and I enjoyed working on this book,” said Dean Markham. “There is an important argument made in this book. We believe that Jesus used humor in his ministry; and we invite the Church to model Jesus and do the same.”

A treasure trove of biblical insights, homiletical helps, and just good humor, Lectionary Levity also functions as a practical manual on how to use humor in preaching and allows the reader to view the gospel in a different light so as to enliven the worship experience.

Founded in 1823 as a beacon of hope in a country new and finding its way, Virginia Theological Seminary is the flagship Seminary of the Episcopal Church. One of our first benefactors was Francis Scott Key whose poem provides the text for our national anthem. In the 191 years since being established, VTS has led the way in forming leaders of the Episcopal Church, including: the Most Rev. John E. Hines (VTS 1933, D.D. 1946), former presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church; the Rt. Rev. John T. Walker (VTS 1954, D.D. 1978), the first African-American bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington; and theologian, author and lay preacher Ms. Verna J. Dozier (VTS D.D. 1978). Serving the worldwide Anglican Communion, Virginia Theological Seminary educates approximately 25% of those being ordained who received residential theological education.
